Weed Measurements: How Much is an Ounce, Gram, Pound, Quarter?

Foraying into the realm of cannabis/marijuana; especially if you are a beginner, can be a difficult task. As with any other venture, one tends to learn the ins and outs as time progresses. However, we believe getting accustomed to weed measurements is one of the most important topics to learn. Not only will the knowledge provide you with guidance on how much cannabis you need, but it will also save you time and the embarrassment of not knowing what the retailer and labels mean when referring to the many different weed measurements.

If you have never purchased cannabis before, you may be unaware of the pricing structure. When you purchase cannabis in small amounts, it is priced by the gram. As the quantity purchased increases, the price per gram decreases. In other words, weed is expensive if bought in small quantities, but becomes more economical once the quantity increases. For example: if you buy 1 gram of weed, it will cost $10; and if you buy 5 grams of weed, it will cost you $40. In this example, you will pay a lower price per gram when you buy the 5 grams ($8/gram) but a higher price when buying the single gram ($10/gram).

That was just a general example, the article will provide you with an in-depth comprehensive overview of weed measurements and everything you need to know about them. Although not too complex, these terms and measurements can be confusing in the sense that cannabis is measured in both the metric and imperial systems depending on the weight.

One Gram of Weed

Price: $6.50 – $15 / gram

A single gram of weed is the smallest quantity of weed you can buy. One gram amounts to approximately 1/28th of an ounce. Usually, two small-sized cannabis buds weigh around one gram. How many joints you can get out of a gram really depends on how you roll it, but on average you should be able to get 2-3 joints out of it. This is one of the most common weed measurements.

A gram of weed is commonly known as “A G of Weed” and “A Dime Bag” among the cannabis community. On average, a gram of cannabis costs around $8-$10 in Canada, with the lowest price starting from $6.50 in some provinces and reaching upwards of $15.

Eighth of Weed

Price: $5.75 – $14 / gram

An Eighth of weed simply means 1/8th of an ounce. Measured in grams, that makes it a total of 3.5 grams (1 ounce= 28 grams; 1/8th ounce = 28/8 grams = 3.5 grams).

Purchasing an eighth of weed is a good way of stocking up while saving some cash. The retailer or dispensary will charge you a lower price per gram. This amount should be enough to make 8-10 joints.

Slangs such as “Half a quarter“, “HQ”, and “Slice” are used commonly to refer to an eighth of weed. The term “Slice” was created in reference to the common pizza being divided into 8 slices. Slangs vary from region to region and there is no hard and fast rule which states you have to call it by these names. “Eighth of an Ounce” is also well understood by most of the cannabis community.  An eighth of weed costs anywhere between $20 – $50 in Canada.

Half-Eighth of Weed

Price: $6 – $14 / gram

For many cannabis enthusiasts, a half-eighth of weed is more than enough for their weekly dose of cannabis. Simply put, (1/16th) of an ounce is a half-eighth of weed. This amounts to 1.75 grams of herbaceous marijuana nugs. Again, depending on your preferences, you should be able to roll 4-5 joints on average.

A known slang for this amount is “Teenth” (although not very popular).  Buying a half-eighth of weed is a step up from a single gram and gives you better value for your money while getting a decent amount of the herb.

Half-eighth of cannabis will generally cost you at least $12-$25 depending on the strain.

Quarter of Weed

Price: $5 – $10 / gram

A quarter of weed, also known as a quad, is actually (1/4th) of an ounce. As discussed above, an ounce contains 28 grams and by dividing it into 4 quarters, you’ll get 7 grams, which is the number of grams per quarter of weed.

It is commonly referred to as a ‘Q’ of weed and is very popular among users who don’t want to visit a dispensary often. This amount will make around 15-20 joints/spliffs very easily. This is another very common weed measurement.

As for the price, a quarter of weed will cost you anywhere between $35 – $70 depending on the quality of it.

Half Ounce of Weed

Price: $4 – $10 / gram

Half of an ounce, when converted to grams, is 14 grams of marijuana. (1 ounce = 28 grams, 28/2 = 14 grams). It also equals approximately 30-40 joints/spliffs.

Although half an ounce of weed is commonly referred to as “half a zip”, and “half-o“, nomenclature may still vary in different parts of the globe.

When you buy cannabis in bulk quantities, it’s much more affordable, so as we move up the ladder in terms of quantity, you will find the price per gram of weed slightly drop with every jump. Expect to pay anywhere between $90-$150 for a half-ounce of good quality cannabis.

Ounce of Weed

High Grade Price: $7 + / gram : $190 +

Low Grade Price: $3.25 – $5 / gram : $90 – $140

In our opinion, an ounce of weed is the most cost-effective solution when buying a larger amount of cannabis. An ounce of weed totals 28 grams and can last a fortnight or even a couple of months depending on how quickly you consume it.

Among other names such as an “O“, “Oz” the “O Zone”, and “a Lid”, it is most commonly referred to as a zip of weed. The number of joints you ask? An ounce will be able to create upwards of 70-100 joints/ spliffs depending on how you roll it.

The price of an ounce varies widely depending on the quality of the bud and location. For lower quality cannabis, an ounce can cost you anywhere between $90 – $150. When purchasing a higher grade bud, the prices can reach upwards of $190+.

This is one of the most popular weed measurements for larger purchases of the herb. Most users don’t go beyond the ounce mark because of how long it lasts, however, if you’re someone who intends to buy even more, read on!

Quarter-Pound of Weed

Price: $3.50 – $4.90 / gram : $390 +

As the name indicates, a quarter-pound of weed is a quarter of one pound of marijuana. That is equal to 4 ounces or 112 grams of the herb (1 pound= 16 ounces= 448 grams). Since it is quadruple of an ounce of weed, which we said lasts for over 100 joints, you can multiply this by 4 yourself to get a count of the number of joints you can get out of a quarter-pound. That amounts to around 400-500 depending on whether you smoke pure marijuana or mix it with tobacco.

A quarter-pound of weed is known as “A Quap”, “QP”, is really just an abrupt way of reading its initials QP. A quarter-pound can cost you around $390-$550 depending on the location and quality.

Half-Pound of Weed

Price: $3 – $4.50/ gram : $600 +

A half-pound of weed is exactly double the quantity of a quarter-pound of weed. This quantity measures 8 ounces or an equivalent of 224 grams of cannabis.

A low to medium quality of a half pound of weed can be purchased for $600, whereas top-quality stuff costs around $785-$900, depending on where it is purchased from.

Among the cannabis community, it is usually referred to as “a half-pounder” or “HP”. Although the high price, if you calculate the number of people that can smoke with this amount, it adds up to 10 people smoking 2 good-sized spliffs each, every day, for more than 2 months! Furthermore, that amounts to $78 – $90 dollars per person, which is reasonable considering you’re getting 2 months’ worth of product.

Pound of Weed

Price: $2.50 – $4 / gram : $1100 +

Commonly referred to as a “pillow sack”, “P”, “L”, “Pack, and “an elbow (or simply bow)”, a pound of weed is 16 ounces or an equivalent 448 grams of marijuana. Purchasing it from a dispensary for recreational purposes can cost you anywhere between $1100 to $1750.

To give you an estimate about the quantity of the weed that you’ll be getting at this price, imagine this; this quantity of weed is equal to a small watermelon! Lasting up to 1000 or more joints, this large quantity is every cannabis connoisseur’s dream.

Two Grams of Weed

2 grams of weed is 2/28 ounces (0.07 ounces) of the green herb and can be visually imagined as two big grapes.

It will give you around 4-6 pure spliffs and/or 8-10 cannabis and tobacco-filled joints. You can request a “dub” or “twin” when you’re trying to refer to 2 grams of weed and most cannabis workers will understand what you need. A gram of weed usually costs around $8-$10 but a “twin” will be around $15-20, giving you a lower price per gram overall.

Five Grams of Weed

Not a very common quantity purchased, so we placed it towards the end. Five grams of weed can be visually imagined as a handful of herbs or 5 large grapes.

5 grams of the “5G” is enough to get a large gathering started as it can be used to roll 10-15 pure spliffs and/or 15-20 tobacco mixed joints. As mentioned earlier, the price per gram of weed drops as the quantity purchased increases. With a price tag of around $8-$10 dollars per gram of weed sold individually, you can expect the price to drop to anywhere between $6-$10 dollars per gram.

Ten Grams of Weed

Ten grams of weed is 4 grams less than a half-ounce of weed and is referred to as “10G” in street slangs. 10 grams of weed can give you between 20-30 joints and thus is enough to last you a month, especially if you add tobacco or other herbs into your joints, which automatically increases the number of joints produced. You can get your hands on the “10G” for $60-$90 depending on the area of purchase and the grower or dispensary you get it from.

A Kilogram of Weed

The mother of all weed purchases, 1 kilogram of weed is equal to a thousand grams, 2.2 pounds, and 36.74 ounces. A kilogram of weed will last you several months and so you’ll have to store it in an airtight jar to preserve its freshness.

Expect the price for a kilogram to start from $3200+. Bear in mind that medical marijuana and marijuana sold for recreational purposes may vary in their prices according to different areas and different sellers. The prices quoted above are just the average rates of the aforementioned quantities.

Grams to Ounces / Ounces to Gram

Grams (g) and ounces (oz.) both are universally recognized measuring units for weight and mass. Ounce, being an imperial unit, is used in countries like the UK and USA, and a few other countries. A gram, on the other hand, is pretty commonly used all across the world.

If you wish to convert grams to ounces, here is a simple breakdown:

1 Ounce = 28 grams

Dividing 1 by 28 we get 0.0357.

Hence,

1 gram = 0.0357 oz.

Now assume you have 1.5 oz and wish to know its gram metrics

1 Ounce = 28 grams

1.5 oz. × 28 = 42 grams

Weed Measurements: THC Percentage

THC content is measured as a percentage of the compound (THC) inside the flower of a cannabis plant compared to other lesser-known compounds and plant matter.

Whether you’re looking to consume accurate medicinal dosage or want to calculate the potency for recreational use, deciphering marijuana metrics will come in handy. If you want a dosage calculator to help make edibles, we made one here! We understand how confusing this process can be even for seasoned consumers, therefore, we’d like to take you through a simple guide on understanding the difference between THC concentration and flower/bud weight.

THC concentration is measured in milligrams as a standard in. (You will have to convert the flower/bud weight into grams first if it is in ounces). It doesn’t matter if you buy your weed from a dispensary or online, its THC concentration will be mentioned which can range anywhere between 0%-35%.

Let’s assume that you bought a gram of weed with 25% THC concentration. Let’s do the math:

1gram = 1000 milligrams

1000 milligrams × 25% THC = 250 milligrams THC

So, a gram of weed with 25% THC concentration will have 250mg of THC per gram.

How to Measure and Weigh Weed

With the introduction of technology, measuring weed is no more a mathematician’s job. From electronic weighing machines to pocket-sized digital scales, you can have accurate weed measurements within minutes.

Whether you’re a perfectionist seeking accuracy, want accurate measurements for making cannabis edibles, or just want to ensure that you’re getting the right amount of grams for the money that you spent, there are a lot of affordable and portable product options available in the market.

Pro tip: Remember that the moisture of your herb is part of its weight, and therefore the weight will start to reduce as soon as the flowers start drying up.
